The Educational Surrogate Parent (ESP) Volunteer Training equips volunteers with the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate for students with disabilities who do not have a parent available to represent them in the special education process. This training, in partnership with the Colorado Department of Education, provides an in-depth understanding of the role and responsibilities of an ESP and the special education system in Colorado.

Participants will learn:

  • What an Educational Surrogate Parent (ESP) is and why they are needed
  • Who can become an ESP and the qualifications required
  • The responsibilities of the Colorado Department of Education, local school districts, and ESPs
  • An overview of the special education process, including Dispute Resolution options

Upon completing the training, passing the quiz with a score of 85% or higher, and submitting the required survey, participants will officially become volunteer ESPs. Their names will be forwarded to the Colorado Department of Education and added to the ESP list for the school districts they have selected.

Join us in making a difference in the lives of students with disabilities by ensuring they have a knowledgeable and dedicated advocate throughout their educational journey!

This training is facilitated by PEAK Parent Center and the Colorado Department of Education
